2005 was our first vintage with the Broken Leg Vineyard and as expected, it was our last Syrah harvest, squeaking in on October 21st right ahead of several storms.  Like all of our Syrah, we picked into 35 lb lug bins to ensure the highest quality fruit arrives at the winery.   Approximately 3% fermented whole cluster and we co-fermented 4% Broken Leg Viognier picked with the Syrah.  Both primary and MLF occurred without inoculation.  The wine stayed sur lie for 8 months until we racked for the first time.  Another 4 months in a mix of 1, 2 and 3 year old French Oak barrels and then the final blend was
created and allowed to join for 3 weeks in tank prior to bottling.  This is a nail biting Syrah vineyard to make as it just barely gets ripe each year but we think the risk is definitely worth the reward.

The nose boasts an intoxicating perfume of violets, blueberry and spice interlaced with meaty, earthy undertones.  This is a pure and vibrant Syrah of exceptional depth and structure that will drink well for decades.  In the short term, decanting is recommended.
